An Introduction to Large Format Printing
A print of significantly large size, more than four feet wide for say a banner or a vehicle wrap is made using large format printing techniques and these prints are used for both commercial and private use. It is possible to very accurately reproduce large prints on a large sized medium.
Large format printing is one of the options available today with modern printing technology. This method of printing has several very useful applications and a lot of businesses use this for their printing requirements. Also known as wide format printing, this method of printing is widely utilized by both individuals and businesses. The cost of this type of printing can be high if you compare it to traditional printing methods but the results and the payoffs are worth every penny. More and more people are opting for this method because of the stunning results that it delivers.
Why Large Format Printing?
Your local print shop may or may not have large format printing facilities. Usually, print shops use A4 size sheets or A3 and rarely they use A2. But large format means prints that are bigger than 48 inches and they are usually not done on paper, a stronger medium like vinyl or plastic is used. There are special printers required for this purpose. The printer itself can print without limits. It can print indefinitely as long as there is supply of electricity and toner, but the limiting factor here is the size of the printing surface. Large format prints are between 48 and 72 inches. Anything beyond 72 inches (that is 6 feet) is called grand format.
But the term large format printing is loosely applied to any reasonably large size of printed material. This printing method is used to make large banners and also to make wraps. You must have seen commercial vehicles like mail vans and pizza delivery vehicles carrying company colors. These used to be painted on but these days it is much more convenient to use wraps. The wraps are also easier to peel off and replace in case there is an update of some sort to the colors used. Most commercial vehicles are vans and use large format printing while buses and trucks and buildings require grand format printing.
Use Large Format Printing
Large format printing has gone digital and it is possible to recreate any image in a large format. If you want to print your company logo or colors, they can be reproduced to the exact shade and they will stay that shade for several months or even years depending on what the wrap is exposed to. As for non-commercial printing, if you want a graphic of, say your favorite rock idol or some picture you really like, it is now possible to very accurately reproduce the same onto a suitable medium.
